about

Train passing sound from www.freesound.org/people/cornodrig/sounds/76679/ member: Cornodig

This poem is my approach to a dark history of "train travel“. However, it is up to the listener’s interpretation of the poem. I did some field recording at a station on Putlitzbrücke here in Berlin, where during the Nazi regime Jews were deported. Then the station Moabit functioned as a freight station. Today on this site a memorial has been put up to commemorate this atrocity. It is hard to digest and shall never be forgotten. Being in conflict if I - a German - am allowed to give the victims a voice, I have decided to do so. The sounds were only slightly alienated to frame the poem.

lyrics

To The East

a cabin in a cattle car
build for 50 more or less
now tripled narrowness
that’s 300 eyes of fear

to the East they said
to the East they

all this unbearable sighing
in this wooden box
o, how the dust in my palm
corresponds to the rumbling of the tracks

it’s a cattle car you must know

my throat burns

I cannot even tell if it’s night or day
is it the moon light
shining through this tiny hole?

where are we now?
to the East they said

suddenly a cry

staring eyes
someone takes pity on
closes their eyelids with his bony hands

where will this train lead me?
where will this train take me?

to the East they said
to the East they said

all these faces
I feel pain in my —

Will I ever see her again?

You must know
it’s a cattle car
build for 50 more or less
I heard they call it special trains

to the East they said
to the East
to the East
